The Ezo Library

About the site name

Ezo (蝦夷) is the old name for Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan's main islands, used before the island was formally renamed in 1869. The Latin form ezoensis — “of Ezo” — survives to this day in the scientific names of species native to the island. Librarivm Ezoensis is simply the library of Ezo.
